Reading Ancient Objects Inside Out. Greek Figure-Decorated Pottery in Portugal

In December 2024, the book Reading Ancient Objects Inside Out. Greek Figure-Decorated Pottery in Portugal was published in the Archaeopress Archaeology series. The scientific editors are Rui Morais, Delfim Leão, Maria de Fátima Silva, Daniela Ferreira, and David Wallace-Hare. The monograph examines Greek vases preserved in various museums and collections in Portugal through two different but complementary approaches: a philological perspective (scripta) and an iconographic perspective (eikon). The first part (scripta) consists of seven articles that analyze the decorations represented on Greek vases from a mythological, literary and cultural perspective. The second part (eikon) consists of two sections. The first includes ten studies on the iconography of decorated examples published in 2022 in the catalogue Myths, Gods & Heroes. Greek Vases in Portugal/Mitos, Deuses & Heróis. Vasos Gregos em Portugal (see our news from December 2023). The second consists of five articles dedicated to the iconographic study of an interesting set of Greek pottery that were not included in the aforementioned publication of 2022, most of which are nonpublished. The monograph concludes with the catalogue of the studied objects, arranged by production centres and from oldest to youngest. Twenty-three researchers, including the editors, from various European and American universities and research centres participated in the work. Also noteworthy is the publication’s excellent graphic section.
