The Iberia Graeca Centre is a project promoted by the Spanish Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Culture of the Generalitat of Catalonia in 2006 (Official State Gazette – BOE 56 of 6/3/2007) to develop projects on research, documentation, conservation and the dissemination of the Greek archaeological heritage of the Iberian peninsula.

Iberia Graeca was born from the relationship of scientific collaboration established between the National Archaeological Museum, through the Department of Greek and Roman Antiquities, and Archaeology Museum of Catalonia, through the headquarters of Empúries, which noted the need for the creation of a Document Centre on Greek trade and presence in Iberia. The main objective was to create a website that would develop, among other sections, a Document Database where published Greek objects from archaeological sites on the Iberian Peninsula would be collected.

From 2011 the Iberia Graeca Centre was equipped with its own technical and administrative staff, with annual operating budget and the headquarters in the Casa dels Forestals of Sant Martí d’Empúries (l’Escala, Girona). The Iberia Graeca Centre is administered by the Spanish Ministry of Culture and Sport, through its National Archaeological Museum, and the Ministry of Culture of the Generalitat of Catalonia, through its Archaeological Museum of Catalonia, with the collaboration l’Escala Town Council (Girona).

The collaboration agreement between the Spanish Ministry of Culture and Sport and the Ministry of Culture of the Generalitat de Catalunya ended on October 2, 2020. Since then, the Iberia Graeca Centre has operated as one of the headquarters of the Museu d’Arqueologia de Catalunya (MAC), a national musem integrated since 2014 into the Agència Catalana del Patrimoni Cultural (ACdPC) of the Generalitat de Catalunya, which has assumed its annual operating budget, with the collaboration of the l’Escala Town Council.

On January 1st 2026, the Document Database of Iberia Graeca has 12.820 record cards of Greek pottery and singular objects from the Iberian Peninsula from 2.620 archaeological contexts corresponding to 510 archaeological sites, and a graphic support of 15.517 images. This documentation has been realized thanks to the collaboration with various research centres and organisations.
