Un català a Grècia. Una mirada a una història compartida

The publishing house “Pagès editors” has just published the book by Dr. Eusebi Ayensa i Prat, Un català a Grècia. Una mirada a una història compartida, winner of the 38th Premi d’Assaig Josep Vallverdú (2021), with an epilogue by the Greek novelist and intellectual Petros Màrkaris. The book is an interesting essay on the activities carried by Dr. Ayensa as director of the Instituto Cervantes de Atenas between 2007 and 2012, which aimed to disseminate the historical facts shared by Catalonia and Spain with Greece throughout history. The Greek colony of Emporion (Empúries), founded in the 6th century BC, the stay of Ramon Llull in Cyprus at the beginning of the 14th century, the presence of the Almogavars in the counties of Athens and Neopatria in the 14th century, the battle of Lepanto in 1571, the performances of the dancer Àurea de Sarrà at the Acropolis, or the relations of Pandelís Prevelakis and Konstandinos Kavafis with Catalonia in the 20th century, were the subject of seminars, exhibitions, conferences and debates throughout the direction of Dr. Ayensa at the Instituto Cervantes de Atenas. His comments on the cultural institutional relations between Spain and Greece and the impossibility of creating stable and long-term cultural structures and projects, such as the necessary and unborn Escuela Española de Historia y Arqueología en Atenas, are of enormous interest.
