The Institut Català d’Arqueologia Clàssica (ICAC), based in Tarragona, has just published the book Análisis arqueométrico de elementos numismáticos argénteos en el nordeste peninsular by Rosa María Mercado Guirado. It is a posthumous edition of the final work of the University Master Degree of this ill-fated young researcher. The study is based on archaeometric analysis, mainly lead isotope analyses, carried out a set of silver objects, with chronologies from the end of the 6th century to the beginning of the 2nd century BC, from the Greek city of Emporion (Empúries) and the Iberian settlements of Ullastret (Girona), Mas Castellar de Pontós (Girona) and the Castellet de Banyoles (Tivissa, Tarragona). Among the materials analyzed are several drachmas and fractions of the Emporion mint and pieces that were used for personal use (a ring, a fibula, a bracelet, …). The objective of the research was to establish the origin of the silver that was used for the minting of the coins and the manufacture of the objects analyzed. In conclusion, the majority use of silver mixtures is a consequence of the recycling of previous materials, although it has been possible to determine their origin, basically from the south of France, the south-east of the Iberian Peninsula and the island of Eivissa.
